Are You Ready to Commit? »

How many times have you made a commitment to change an old habit or form a new behavior only to find a vast well of resistance?

We sign up for the gym but rarely go. We choose to eat better and then binge on a favorite food. We start a new project but never finish it. We make excuses, or worse, we blame ourselves for lack of discipline. But it isn’t really our fault because the brain prefers to rely on old habits rather than form new ones!

In order to learn anything new, or change anything old, we have to habitually repeat a process before it’s embedded in long-term memory. But the brain finds repetition boring, and boredom turns off the motivation centers that drive us to reach any goal.

If you want something “more” (money, love, wisdom, happiness or peace, for example) you’ll have to overcome the brain’s natural laziness.

You can do this easily by changing your routines. Instead of saying the same prayer or affirmation each day, create original variations. If you’re trying to lose weight, change your diet strategy every month. Make it different and your brain will find it interesting, and with that new-found curiosity, the motivation centers awaken. A large quantity of the pleasure chemical dopamine is released, and this literally increases consciousness and your desire to strive toward long-term goals.

The same is true with work, play and relationships. If you don’t add variety on a daily basis, your brain will get bored and you’ll find yourself irritated with people and tasks you normally like. So the moment you feel that tiny loss of interest, take a 60-second pleasure break to do something fun and different.

Still feel resistance? Take a sheet of paper and write down every reason you don’t want to change. Then write down every reason why you do.

Look at both lists and ask yourself, “What do I really value and desire?” Trust your intuition — your inner spiritual wisdom — and write down five to 10 creative ways to keep your mind intrigued.

Watch how that neural spark of inspiration will return!

Expanding Our Prosperous Horizons »

Dr. Ernest Holmes once said the biggest problem that he saw in Religious Science was that too many people were merely affirming what they liked, and denying what they didn’t like. Eric Butterworth articulates this tendency in his classic “Spiritual Economics.”
In the minds of many students, it’s a matter of making Divine law work. But the truth is you can’t make law work. Law is an inexorable process. You are always in the working milieu of law as, for example, you are always under the influence of gravity. One is foolish to say, “I am going to make a demonstration of gravity.” The fact is that gravity is a constant.
Aligning, rather than manipulating, spiritual law is our true opportunity toward the expansion of our horizons. The Prosperity Affirmation of Holmes from the “Holmes Reader on Practical Wisdom” gave us a wonderful purposeful phrase that raises our perspective when he wrote, “I am keeping my whole mind and thought and expectation open to new experiences, to happier events, to a more complete self expression.”
Prosperity is a process of expanding our horizons through openness, wonder, possibility and expectation. It’s about a consistent and devoted practice of directing our awareness to the highest thought possible and embracing our capacity for creativity.
Don’t love your job? Ready for a move? Counter-intuitively listing what you love about your job will move you much more quickly to your next opportunity that staying resentful and disappointed.
Gratitude and forgiveness are powerful tools for a higher relationship with the law. When I find myself lapsing into old negative ideas, I bless these thoughts as loving reminders that there is something far more precious and productive for me to contemplate and experience.
I align with the Law, joyfully; I know I am one with the same law and intelligence that created all the amazing art and creative ideas that bless our world. My horizon is expanding, my mind is receptive, and I synchronize with divine love, joy, health and prosperity. I have enough to spare and enough to share. And so it is!

Be Aware of the Inflow of Prosperity in Your Life »

How much time do we spend trying to figure things out? Especially how to increase our prosperity as we endeavor to make more money, get a promotion, earn a lot more business or build up our savings? We can spend a lot of energy trying to get in control or feeling out of control when it comes to money.

Yet, we know that Consciousness is cause. Having a consciousness of prosperity, knowing Spirit as our Source and relying on spiritual practices to demonstrate more prosperity may seem challenging when we say things to ourselves such as we have bills to pay, a child to put through college or a business to grow.

But this is precisely what we must give up, surrender and stop doing. We have to surrender our human need for control, figuring it out or making it happen.

Spiritual living relies on spiritual principles to demonstrate prosperity.

Dr. Ernest Holmes reminds us that living from spiritual truth is “an act of complete surrender of the human to the Divine without the loss of the human. It is an act of complete inflowing of the Divine into the human … .”

Surrendering to the Divine inflow of abundance is the first step in growing our prosperity. Surrendering our need to control or figure it out opens us to the unlimited reality and the unlimited potentiality that lies in the heart of the Divine.

Surrender, then, is not giving up or giving in. Rather, it is stepping aside and allowing the Divine so fully into our consciousness that our life is taken over by Its Presence. Then the unlimited abundance of Spirit demonstrates as our ever-increasing prosperity.

This inflow of prosperity continues to invite us to surrender our need to hold on to it, store it up or hoard it in fear that it won’t be here tomorrow.

Giving, tithing and sharing our good, keeps us from clinging to our limited human ways.

You can give here, today, through the Science of Mind Foundation and help spread the message of this joyous, effortless and powerful way to live!

Surrendering to Our Good »

Why does prosperity have to be such an issue for so many of us? How can our beliefs about abundance and unlimited supply help calm our concerns about money? The media constantly bombard us with strategic marketing designed to make us want more stuff. We think buying the product will make us part of the elite, will cause us to get the girl/guy, job or car. Maybe we just want it because, well, we deserve it!

Once we are exposed to the concept of prosperity being all around us, we can suddenly want to experience that in our lives, often in a much greater way than ever before. In our society, we don’t need money to fulfill those desires — we charge it! But, understanding the abundance of the Universe does not include putting ourselves in debt and then expecting God to show up with the needed money.

Dr. J. Kennedy Shultz was quoted as saying, “We don’t need more money; we need a bigger consciousness!” He was right. Prosperity is not something we attain through long hours of study, complicated prayer treatments and perhaps wishful thinking. The prosperity for which so many of us long is all around us. It is ours to receive just as abundantly as the air we breathe or the water in which fish swim.

So how do we move from a consciousness of lack to a life in which we realize the true abundance that is ours? We are required to believe with all our mind, heart and soul that we are the prosperity we seek. We seek to exercise a prudent and responsible attitude with regard to money. And then we do what is perhaps the greatest task: We surrender to the process.

Like it or not, the abundance or apparent lack of prosperity we experience is a direct reflection of our consciousness. If we don’t like the result we see, then it’s time to change our attitude and begin relying on the principles by which we live.

The change may be gradual, but change will come as long as we are open and receptive to having the universe laws in which we believe actually work in our life in amazing ways.
